DIY has been around for a long time, however, like many other things, the internet and specifically the social aspect of the internet has accelerated the phenomenon and facilitated endless global possibilities.

With younger generations, doing things yourself is much more desirable with the amount of resources available today.

So what is it about DIY that is so popular and makes it resonate with so many people around the world? 

It’s the idea of self creation, self direction and some use DIY as a healthy way to escape from the stress of everyday life. Another phenomenon of DIY is the idea to share your creation with others. Platforms such as Youtube, Pinterest and so on allow people to showcase their skills. DIY has seemingly tapped into a basic human being to create, to enhance and to push the limits of what one can do with little to no expense or elaborate resources.

Whether it be building a shelf or building a website online, DIY is quickly becoming the best and most convenient way of doing something.

Home improvement is the leading sector when it comes to DIY.

Looking to remodel your home or renovate to get it on the market? DIY projects for home improvement will boost your home value. This can be done through repainting your home, installing new floors, appliances etc.

It has been said that 71% of homeowners say that inflation has caused them to do a project themselves rather than hire a contractor.

Doing a project yourself comes with many benefits. It allows you to be creative and customize things to your own liking.

It is also a great way to improve your mental health. Doing and accomplishing projects like these can boost mental health in a way that completing tasks on your own, leaves you feeling satisfied and proud. Another way DIY activities can improve your mental health is by peace of mind. If something needs to be fixed, doing it yourself can give you a sense of relief.

Further, doing home improvement projects yourself can be a big money saver as your expenses will be limited to materials that you use.

Online shopping is the new popular way to make an easy purchase – especially since COVID.

DIY in the retail and ecommerce space benefits both the consumer and brand.

For the consumer, shopping online is easier and a more convenient way to shop. The consumer is also exposed to a lot more product offerings than would otherwise be, when shopping in a store. The consumer also has a more personalized experience online when it comes to ad targeting – showing products that were previously liked by the consumer. With that said, consumers don’t even need to search much as they are being given what they want to see directly in front of them.

Convenience is important especially when it comes to the younger generation (ages 18-34) and it comes to no surprise that they are the ones that drive the majority of the food delivery business.

While meal planning is great for some, it’s not for everyone – especially the busier ones. Meal delivery kits are a time saver and highly customizable to suit your dietary needs, family size and price point. However, they can be more costly than your average trip to the grocery store.

That being said, what consumers love most about these food delivery apps and meal delivery kits are the convenience of them and the time savings they bring.

When it comes to DIY and travel, DIY allows travelers for more flexibility and customization in terms of itinerary and activities, giving travelers the freedom to explore at their own pace.

DIY travel does require more effort and planning as travelers need to arrange transportation, accommodation, activities and so on. On the other hand, packaged tours (often obtained through travel agencies) offer convenience and ease of planning, at a cost. 

That being said, with DIY travel you are getting flexibility and personalization that packaged tours do not get. DIY is also budget friendly as it allows you to set a budget instead of paying someone to plan or schedule an itinerary for you.

About the series authors

Not sure, so the journey goes on… Adacado continues to improve and educate, and has decided that perhaps the basics of DIY are not that obvious, so we have set out on a venture to learn more and more about DIY, and pass on our learnings, with the hope that it will encourage more people to become DIY with more things, including advertising.
